Production is not much higher than it was in the early 1980s.

Here you can see that monthly production is about where it was in 2005.

This graph shows that about 1980 or so the production hit a local maxima that isn't much, if any, below where it was in 2000.

Production can't keep up because of supply issues. And why is that? Rarely, does demand outstrip supply for a period longer than a year or so. Crude prices have been going up since 2002.
