In winning the 1975 Super Bowl, the Steelers’ defense limited the Minnesota Vikings’ offense to just 17 yards on the ground in a 16-6 victory. Another Super Bowl victory followed in 1976 when the Steelers defeated Dallas 21-17. The team’s third Super Bowl win came in 1979 on the wings of a 1978 season that saw the Steelers hold its opponents to an NFLlow 195 points. Rule changes that followed seem designed, in part, to prevent such a defensive dynasty from occurring again.

"By 1974, the defense was clearly dominating the offenses, especially in the passing game," says Don Weiss, former assistant to Commissioner Pete Rozelle. "Passing percentage, and just the general ratio of offense-todefense and pass-to-rush was beginning to show an imbalance. And scoring was at the lowest point in post-World War II history at that point. And that’s when we opened it up."
