THAT is only one facet. The obvious one. There is the matter of compartmentalization though. To simply say "the US" and "Israel" is an oversimplification that is used to imply that there was not supra (and/or multi) nationalistic influences. To say "the US" and "Israel" implies a one-way street.
Nationalism is the last thing on most minds of those who are most influential.
