Horses can be a great companion and can be very expensive. Ranch horses are not so bad, but they way my wife does it they are a luxury tax.

The longest spurs I ever wore might have been 3/8 inch long nubs. It was not my habit to use them when the horse responded appropriately to my messed up aids. Better riders don't lose the attention of a horse, and a small spur helps to regain it.
