Every small town I lived in (many near military bases) had mom and pop stores that charged outlandish prices, clerks were rude and unhelpful since they were the only game in town. When I was in Idaho, I would do without and wait for a reason to go to Boise and shop at the WMT, Lowes and Safeway just so the mom and pops wouldn't get my business. Most of the base rejoiced when the WMT was finally built despite the objections of the small businesses and yes the small businesses went under yet I knew of no one that was the least bit sad about it. 8888888888888 Maurice - You said, " If people are free to make their own pricing decisions, more people will get it right. " Is this why we pay sports stars more than teachers and then complain about how Johnnie can't read? Is this why most Americans know nothing about what is going on in the world but know what every movie star ate for breakfast that day or what fashion trend they MUST follow because Jolie or Alba is wearing it? Is this why we have nothing but Soaps on at night and 20 versions of CSI. WHy most guys know nothing about basic finance, can't fathom compounding interest, debt but can spew useless details about sporting stats going back decades? People left on their own make nothing but stupid decisions. I recall my father thinking car companies were dumb because they were trying to sell people SUVs only 10 years after the oil crisis of the 1970s. He said no one was that stupid and they would be lucky to sell 100 nation wide. Looked at a mall parking lot lately? People make nothing but bad choices then blame everyone but themselves for the results. Note the NASDAQ bubble and aftermath, the housing crisis, etc. Right now if you asked 100 people why the market was up, they would have no clue that it is mainly due to currency devaluation. The market priced in anything but dollars is flat to down since Y2K and isn't anywhere near a currency and inflation adjusted recovery. PT - Barnum was right, Never under estimate the ignorance of the public. After all, Washington re-elected Mayor Marian Barry and New Orleans re-elected Nagan. Need I say more? I do agree with you that for common ground, we need some sort of govornment entity to avoid pollution, over use of resources, common protection etc. Good Luck, Lee
