Did you expect them to be supportive of US presence there? Is there a reason for them to go out of their way to save US forces?

I assume you understand the difference between being complicit and promoting.

What Iran has done, for the most parts, is to support the Shias against the Sunnis. It is unlikely that once they provide the support, they can have a material influence over who or what some Shia militia in the streets of Najaf shoots at.
