I'm not familiar with that kind of salve. My dad used to paint cut ends, but I really think the best thing is to make the cut properly, that is, at right angles to the limb so as to make the smallest possible cut, avoiding the swell of the node. I once made a cut parallel to the trunk, across the node where the branch comes out, and it took a long time to grow over.
