Tell your BIL to create a fuel break around his cabin. It doesn't have to be a clearcut, but ground fuels and ladder fuels should be cleared out. (Ladder fuels are branches that reach down to the ground and provide a ladder for fire to jump into the crown.)

A couple weeks ago I took a drive west of Denver, on US40, to the top of Berthoud Pass (11,000+ feet). We did that for the aspen colors, but it was very noticeable how much orange there was among the pine forest, indicating beetle kill. A real shame.
