When you sell a house, you have to fill out a Seller's Disclosure Form.

One of the questions on the form is:

"Have there been any remodels to the house?"

Next question:

"Were all required permits obtained?"

It will be a real red flag to a buyer if there were substantial renovations to the house and no permits obtained.

And, if the County finds out, I'm sure there are fines that could be imposed. I have even heard of situations where unpermitted improvements were required to be removed.
