I am a Christian and a poker player. But I was still offended by the loud praying at The World Series of Poker Final Table. The prayers came from the eventual winner, Jerry Yang, and his family. It kind of turned my stomach to hear, "Oh, Father, show us your power by giving us another Queen." Or, "Jesus, this is for your glory. Let my hand hold up. In your name I pray."

I am glad Yang won and I don't doubt the sincerity of his faith. But I think such tasteless displays of piety and praying to enrich oneself has to turn off potential converts.

Also, both Wang and the runner up talked about how much money they were going to give to poor people. Jesus tells us to give alms, but to never let the right hand know what the left hand is giving. These guys have to let everyone know.

That being said, I believe in letting the IRS know. The taxes you save can increase your gift. And I'm sure a smart Jewish man like Jesus can understand the economics of that one. <G>
