The old "we are all the same underneath" argument. <But there really is no good correlation between behavior in war and personal values. When pushed to the wall, even the best of us snap. >

No we are not all the same underneath.

There is a good correlation between personal values and behaviour in any situation.

Hideous sadistic thugs are that whether in conflict with others or not. They just have to hide it in normal times and indulge themselves in "acceptable" ways which won't land them in prison. Even in war, they have to watch themselves because not everyone goes along with their ideas and will stop them.

People with Virtuous Values are indeed virtuous. Which doesn't mean those who SAY they are virtuous and show off how virtuous they are by claiming to be believers in Jesus and walk around clutching a Bible, or who make show of doing good works for personal gain, are indeed virtuous. They are just trying to get the benefits of being considered virtuous, on the cheap. What they do when nobody is looking is the test of how virtuous they are.

Do they vote for tax to be spent on them? Or do they vote Libertarian? That's the difference between freedom and slavery. Most people are bludgers and bludgers are just slave-drivers by another name. They want somebody else to be forced to do things they want done, without open market payment on a voluntary basis.
