What makes this a dichotomy? Wise heads may recognize the baby has become endangered lying in that bacterial miasma the bathwater has become, and prefer to do more than just let it sit. You don't have to throw the baby out when you empty the tub.

Compassion has no ultimate right answer. It may be just as well expressed by not enabling those who have become generationally dependent on flawed systems, and attempting instead to encourage more independence. It may be that we can not afford the kind of all-encompassing safety net you seem to believe is a mark of advanced humanity, but it is also likely that that kind of nannyism encourages only more dependence and is an unhealthy state for a nation.

I doubt many people here are adverse to certain safety nets. But applying reason and some discipline along with compassion seems far more advanced to me.

Heck, why stop with 10 to 1, if you didn’t prosecute anyone there would never be an innocent person go to jail. Whether it be law enforcement or public assistance, society has to maintain reasonable limits to be effective and someone’s mere dislike of work doesn’t obligate me to providing a free lunch.
