The one thing that 9/11 has proved to me, is the fragility of US belief in democracy and the so called civil institutions. It's been quite an eye opening experience.

That the government here does not kill and imprison its citizens for saying "Bush should be impeached" is simply a reflection of the fact that such utterances are of little consequence. If in fact shouting "Impeach Bush" could lead to riots or more sever consequences, as is the case in many of the developing countries, then we'd certainly see incarcerations or even worse for those who'd publish such sentiments. Only we'd call it inciting mayhem or terrorism or something like that.

Furthermore, the regime in US is not defined by who is the president. So serious opposition to the president (as oppose to silly chats on the net) is not as sever a blow as it would be in traditional dictatorships. But why don't you try changing the system as whole and see where it will get you. In every instance that such a threat, however remote, has materialized, the government and its agents have reacted very strongly. So your comparisons are not very apt.

What you need to do is the equivalent of purchasing power parity concept in economics for the political realm and you'll see that the US of A is as brutal as the worst of them.

WAS RE: That just says America has fought in wars, and passes over the fact that the USA has an elected representative government with a limited term. That's not the same as maintaining your leadership constantly through force against those who, like it or not, "follow" you - the practice of those 4 countries you listed. The USA doesn't kill and imprison its citizens for saying "Bush should be impeached".

Finance is a gun...politics is knowing when to pull the trigger.
