In regard to Ron Paul's statement about FDIC-insured accounts: There is no difference between "putting deposits in an FDIC insured account" and "private accounts" in the AARP/Democratic view of the world.

Actually, the best idea (which I have not heard from any candidate) would be not to privatize the program, but to immediately make participation in SS voluntary, and eventually phase out the program.
