Lots of sugar maples where I grew up in MN, and I've seen the trees being tapped. I've got some Alaska birch syrup, but it's nowhere near as good as maple syrup.

I don't think there's any way to burn pine needles is there? Even dry ones just smother the fire and smoke. I've got a couple of big White Pines in the back yard and they just got done dumping their old needles. I just use them as mulch. I put in acid loving perennials.
