I recall well how King George I did not finish off Saddam during the first Gulf War. He could have done so very easily. I recall thinking that his unannounced intention must have been to leave Saddam as a bulwark to Iran. And this was a very good plan as Iran's resurgence and influence has grown tremendously since 2003.

King Geo. II of course saw things a bit differently. He obviously thought that WMD in the hands of Saddam was a much more dangerous threat than a resurgent Iran. We'll never know which Hobson's choice was worse.

I don't recall much discussion before the Iraq invasion in the media or by the chattering classes concerning the diluting influence on Iran's ambitions Saddam represented.

It would be nice to have Saddam now, pointed at Iran.
