In this case, Hillary's previous pattern of behavior makes it believable, even though the authors cite only one anonymous source. Considering who the authors are make it believable too. They aren't bomb throwers and they don't carry water for the right. They strike me as reporters who care about their reputations for accuracy. Look at the length Media Matters went to to try and refute the story. It's less a rebuttal and more a handy list of everywhere the story was mentioned, including The Hill.

If you go to HughHewitt.com, and select the talk radio tab, you will see two recent shows he did with Howard Kurtz, ABC's media critic, who just wrote a book on the Network News wars. I think you'll find it an interesting discussion.

Kurtz points out that the network news shows still command 25 million a night (compared to more than double that when Walter Cronkite retired) and they still consider the NYT the prime source of news. Half the time they just rip 'n read.
