We should keep in mind Ferdinand and Isabella were fending off the Moorish invasion, and some Conversos were sympathetic to the Moors. You could say Ferdinand and Isabella were the Last Crusaders, if not for them Europe might be Muslim today....

Spain's power ebbed and held for another 200 years after the expulsion of the Jews, though. Spain wasn't a commercial power that relied heavily on capital. It was a pastoral feudal power that was dependent on loot from abroad.
