OT re: people can supplements up the wazoo, but i'm convinced the body doesn't metabolize the nutrients nearly as well than as natural food.

You are absolutely correct. You also shouldn't take vitamins on an empty stomach. Take them during or right after a meal, not before.

Certain vitamins, such as vitamin A, are toxic in high doses and can kill you.

If you are looking for E supplements, pony up for the D-alpha and skip the cheaper DL-alpha. the DL type is synthetic and contains forms of E the body doesn't recognize. I remember the difference by the mnemonic of DL stands for Don't Like.

As for chopping wood for heat, I was actually thinking about that a few days ago. When/if everyone starts doing that the human race is done for. You are destroying a primary greenhouse gas remover to create more greenhouse gasses. Complete and total disaster when done on a large scale.

WRT adults drinking milk:

No other mammalian species drink milk as adults.
Many Asian cultures drink no milk and eat little or no dairy,
yet they're healthy, productive and long-lived because they get calcium from nuts and sea vegetables, vitamin D from the sun.

And finally, the dairy industry, along with other large agricultural industries, have a few fingers in the FDA's and USDA's pot. They've influenced the USDA's food pyramid to the ill health of American citizens.

Consider other dietary sources of calcium
and if you must drink milk, no more than 8 ounces a day of organic milk may not put your health at risk. Unfortunately, milk farmers have now found ways to milk pregnant cows, whose bodies, like those of their pregnant human counterparts, are surging with sex hormones you may not want in a post-menopausal body.
