<<<This seems to be the original source for 47 million:

Yes, I know. >>>

You knew and still called it hyperbole?

<<<As in "there are 47 million uninsured ERGO we need socialized medicine.">>>

Who said anything about wanting socialized medicine?

How about "there are 47 million uninsured and that seems to be a problem that needs fixing".

Talk about hyperbole.

I'm just teasing those who seem to think the number, whatever it may be, is more salient than it is. As in "there are 47 million uninsured ERGO we need socialized medicine."

I agree, but I think the Census Bureau is reasonably reliable. The way to begin to refute the figure is to drill down and observe that these people were only without insurance sometime during the year, not all year, and 25% are not even U. S. citizens. Then go further and see that this includes children who qualify for SCHIP already and aren't enrolled.

If children don't have access to basic health care, that's a public health problem worthy of a government program. Likewise if middle-aged, middle-class folks who couldn't get health insurance face catastrophic medical costs which might wipe out their life savings. But we shouldn't have to rework the whole system just to handle such cases.
