Re: "...how much deeper into the hole do we have to sink before we have reached crisis?"

Donno... but it just doesn't feel like national 'crisis time' just yet.

Although one can never know from exactly which direction a major storm cloud will appear and precipitate a national crisis, I'm thinking along the lines of Financial Crises, mostly.

People always start to pay attention when the vultures come home to roost, and it begins to seriously affect them in their pocketbooks.

(Perhaps something along the lines of a further collapse of the dollar, foreigners balking at buying more of our sovereign debt thus forcing long-term interest rates to spike higher... all coincident with the further collapse of the housing market, wars and rumors of wars nudging energy prices ever higher --- all coming together to fire off a national recession... one where the Fed's hands are largely tied as to how much they can surge liquidity in the face of pervasive dollar weakness and sovereign funding needs.)

Perhaps something along those, (much predicted) lines?
