Thanks for the thoughtful response. It appears that you and I have different opinions of what the duty of government is. While I am not always successful, the duty of the government that our forefathers founded was to get out of the way of people and allow them to succeed.

I agree with you that everyone should have access to medical care, but that is part of the Hippocratic Oath and charity is best provided by charitable organizations.

Do you agree that the impetus for American independence was a reaction to overbearing government regulation? We can probably agree that the lack of representation also fueled the fire.

Now you are suggesting that we need to create a government with overbearing government regulation. The very idea of creating the noble experiment in the image of what was being fought against is abhorrent.

"in an enlightened society I DO think the better off should help pay for it, "

That is called charity. Let’s keep charity charitable, a government takeover would turn it into tyranny.

"Perhaps you forgot "

Sorry about that.

"I tend to use some strong words at times"

That is a luxury I try to deny myself.

we might need to cut back on heroic end of life care that is very expensive but not very effective for starters.

We have that now with the Medicare hospice program, for people who choose to participate. Big money saver. Hopefully, the hospice idea will continue to proliferate.
