Bob,
I used to envy the mortgage deductibility. I wonder though if it encourages folks to bite off more than they can chew and stretch out the debt .. I paid my current house off in 11 years because frankly I was anal about having my principal residence free and clear ... saved a lot of interest, my down was 25%.

I don't know if you can quantify the added tax that way. It is not just for health care we pay. I imagine that there are many in the US for whom 400$ monthly (plus 3K deductible) is a huge outlay, don't you think ? I know that is the case here. I think our university fees are quite a bit lower also in that tax bag.

Does your plan cover drugs also ? That is a big issue here and not covered. We have private through my wife. She is an audiologist so her hospital has a decent plan and covers part but it still costs us a fair chunk.

time to walk the doggies
