Michael, re: When we stop refighting this war over and over again, we will finally be out of the morass we are in as a nation.

I'd say it differently. I'd say that when we stop trying to pretend that the Vietnam war, and now this one, were something they were not then we will finally be in a position to learn a lesson and get on with the march of civilization.

It was a revisionist view of Vietnam that allowed the neocons to successfully argue that "Iraq was different" and that we could "do it right this time." The lesson of Vietnam is that we can destroy with military power but we cannot build a sovereign people's nation, or at least not in the image we want.

I think the seeds of the Iraq war were laid by some vocal Republican politicians who, over the years, argued that "we could have won in Vietnam if not for the gutless Democrats." If this nation had, instead, forthrightly faced the truths that so many died in Vietnam to teach us we'd have never attempted to "change" Iraq.

For that reason I think it's important that whenever the "that was then and this is now" war drummers start pounding away, we stop the nonsense early. That means we should not allow unrebutted revisionist statements as a first step toward priming some future war pump. Ed
