I'm not out of touch, you've lost perspective. The mild to at most moderate shifts of the economic cycle are not cases of greatly increasing poverty, and in any case we haven't started a downturn on this cycle yet.

You support my point. Worst in two years, not "worst in 20" or even "worst under president Bush". And those where two years with a fairly healthy economy. Poverty increasing significantly would give the worst in decades, not the worst in 2 years where there has been economic growth.

Sentiment about the economy isn't very positive at the movement, but people are much more positive about their own outlook than they are for the country as a whole. Perhaps they read some negative stories and think that things are much worse then they are. Most people are ok, but maybe many of them think they are some sort of exception.
