Just about six months. I had planned to stay indefinitely, but I was voted off the island.

Seriously, though, I don't know how long I would have lasted there, even if health problems hadn't forced my return to the US. It was beautiful, and it was great to be able to scuba dive on those gorgeous reefs most weekends.

At the same time, living there was challenging in a number of ways. It's such a small place. After having lived in New York for twenty one years and Los Angeles for seven, I found it hard to adjust. The cultural adjustment was more difficult than I had imagined it would be, too, even within the ex-pat community. The major problem for me was loneliness.

I believe I would have managed to thrive there, given enough time, but I don't regret having been forced to move back up here.
