I think you're letting Dexter off a little lightly, but I agree with you about Brooks. However, it was a magnificent performance by Costner, despite the holes in the script in terms of explaining his behavior.

My husband was wondering how often such a killer might exist, and luckily I had just read an article in the Atlantic on profilers, and if I recall right it had some statistics on the rarity of highly organized serial killers. Thus I think Mr. Brooks is best looked on as a dysfunctional fantasy- and as with any fantasy, you can't look behind the curtain, or the logic of the thing falls apart.
