How it will turn out, i do not claim to know but your post to sam is correct. I dont think we can be sure of the timing of the attack or whether the attack should have been made at all. Thats for the historians to determine. But we are where we are and my belief is that we have done as much as we can militarily and now its time to declare our mission is completed and turn it over to iraqis, neighbors and even some european countries with creds there. Majority rights are in place. Now we need some protection for sunnis and some accomodation between shiaa and sunnis or soft partition. Thats for them to decide. We cannot impose this by force. Al quaeda is out of there.
