My thinking is that even if Mr. Bush made a stab at even rare gold he would be unable to confiscate a french coin held in your position since it is not monetarily US gold.

Why do you assume that? If the government decides to make private gold ownership illegal, the origin of the mintage would seem likely to be a trivial detail.

That's why I like physical -g- I don't think it will become
illegal to own gold, since it is no longer tied to the dollar,
but you never know, of course.
