"To be honest I found Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance tedious. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas I found to be a work of genius"

This part I agree with wholeheartedly. The "existential" idea, I'm afraid, just leaves me cold. I'm reminded of the French gnome with the wonky eyes, and I could never imagine him having fun. The 60s were more about hedonism than anything else.

Actually, my favorite was Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail, because it was so bizarrely true.

A hideous reflection of the hideous reality that was (and is) Amerika.

And it was all pre-Watergate. Anybody who wasn't paranoid didn't understand the situation, as the saying went.

I wonder if someone will write an HST style chronicling of the last days of Wall Street excess? Probably not. Different world today.
