It's a conductor vs the orchestra thing. The conductor needs all the musicians but they only get to play what he decides on up at the podium.

Look at where the fundamentalists stand after almost 20 years of having "their" preferred candidates in the White House; ready to split with the party and back their own nominee perhaps, because almost no one will champion their purist agenda.

That tells me who was really calling the tune since 1980.
