However, I'm not quite in the mood for the full-scale rant which this deserves.

getting warmed up with this response?

i hate to think about it.

M,
I'd say 90% of my reading is for knowledge of one sort or another... and 10% pure pleasure.. even the knowledge quest is pleasurable though too.. I can sympathize with Carranza's view as there is much to be said for curling up with a good book, or occasionally spending an hour or so browsing a bookstore.. a rare pleasure.. The visual aspect adds to the mix... Electronic media miss that element, much like the conversations here lack the element of body language which only the best writers can manage to even poorly simulate IMVHO.. I think though, that you are correct and the convenience will eventually mean electronic media will win... I still play my old LPs on occasion, drinking in every pop and hiss :O) each often with a memory of its own.. I own 400 or so... but my mp3 collection is nothing short of vast... mp3s go everywhere with me, from music to mandarin lessons :O).. I can't ski with or walk my doggies an LP... even a CD player is a poor companion..

I'm looking for a notebook or PDA presently for traveling and those times I'm waiting at the ski hill... so I can read material previously stored... I'm quite looking forward to that.. so I hope the idea catches on this time...

I recall when ATM (bank machines) first appeared, and they were few and not often used.. too confusing for many... Now it's an annoyance when you cannot find one.. My banking nostalgia fix can be satisfied when I need foreign currency :O)

The Black Swan..

You have tossed the most delicious possible bait in front of me.

It was my pleasure to serve up the bait which brought forth a a wonderful bit of prose.

Libraries, like Andrew Carnegie, my father, and increasingly me, have had their day.

Have you ever explored the Library of Congress? Ever seen its main reading room? Your opinion might change. A beautiful and inspiring place.
