Very true. A real bear market would be disastrous. And it's not an immaterial risk with the collapsing dollar and unsustainable debt levels, budget deficit and trade deficit.

However, even in bear markets, there are always sectors that will rise. That's why it pays to be diversified among asset classes, not just stock sectors. For example, during bear markets bonds, low PE convertibles and dividend paying companies tend to do well. If you are already diversified, then you will have a better outcome than your non-diversified friends.

One last thing, IMHO we ARE NOT heading for a bear market. This feels a lot like the Asian Contagion of the late 90's, only this time it's in the US. These things tend to clear out in 6-12 mos or less and then you have a nice little boomlet in the subsequent 2 years. I believe that the folks who use this as a firesale opportunity and buy good stocks that are beaten down, especially in the large cap tech sector, will do very well after all the big bath write-downs from the Banks are complete. I think that this quarter end Dec and next (end March) we'll see the last of those major write-downs and we'll know the extent of the damage. After that, the economy and markets will rebound very quickly and we'll be in for a great couple of years thereafter.

I'd hate to miss that opportunity by thinking that this time is different and that we're about to enter into a prolonged bear market.
