There was both a novel and a non-fiction about ten years ago that went into the deal we cut Hirohito. MacArthur was very much complicit in it. He knew he could run Japan if he kept him on the throne. Hirohito was THE major war criminal of Japan. But that was quashed.

Contrast that with Germany, where there was no government, and the occupation took a decade and cost immeasurably more in treasure.

The occupation of Germany ended after the Berlin wall came down in 1989. Only then were the Soviet, British, French and American zones (established after WWII) completely dismantled, Including the final zone of occupation which was greater Berlin.

In 1980, during my last "official" trip to Berlin, we still had some 250,000 American troops in Germany.

When that wall came down and the Soviets began withdrawing from Berlin and East Germany, it was replaced with Yankee Go Home signs.
