``Freedom requires religion just as religion requires freedom,' he said.

As Sybil says in CHariots of Fire, "that sounds clever, but what does it mean?"

Is it going to the idea that freedom is granted us by the creator and no one else, so without God there is no right to freedom?

Dale -

Like Rambi, I take issue with that statement. I don't see how or why freedom requires religion. That's a pithy pronouncement without a foundation in logic.

It's a nice line, though, and many people will simply accept it as axiomatic.
