Yes, while we're at it, lets just "suppose" that pigs could fly...............for that would be equally likely. Flying pigs, now that would be "startling" as well!!

Suppose Romney is the Republican nominee and he launches into the culture wars and the evils of secularism against Obama, the Democratic nominee. Obama remains composed and gives an eloquent statement about the importance of tolerance and the evils of divisive partisanship on issues where we should be bringing the country together instead of ripping it further apart.

I doubt that question can be polled but I think the results could be startling. Attackers can be defused by simply refusing to stoop to their level, and condemning the attacks themselves.

I wish you were right but I doubt it. At least in the present. Perhaps some years down the road. I'm reminded of how many times over the past 25 to 30 years pundits and others have lamented the rise of negative campaigning. Only to learn over and over again that it works.

As for that specific attack against Obama, perhaps Romney is dumb enough to engage in that one. If so, I agree, Obama has no problem dealing with that. But if Romney gets the nomination, he will have that full crew of devious Republican trickster souls to draw on, who have been inexplicably genius like at hammering on the most significant weakness around. I would never, for instance, have thought that Kerry could be attacked on his war record. But there you go.
