Exactly. The US System is paying for it. When a German drug company develops a drug knowing it can make a ton of profit in the US market if the drug turns out to be safe and effective, its the US system providing a disproportionate part of the return on investment that motivates the spending on research and provides funds for further research.

How much research are the insurance companies paying for? We're talking about a payment system.

The majority of drug and procedure research is paid for by the government and research institutions, not the drug companies and certainly not the insurance companies. Much of the money comes from charity. It is done by academics...

To assume that if we go to a single payer system that there will be vastly lower investment in medical research is just false. Even a slight decrease in drug company R&D is probably a stretch.
