The Soviets didn't take a nice idea and turn it into fascism. Communism is a brand of fascism. It isn't only in the Soviet Union, that masses were slaughtered but in China, N Korea (crimes still ongoing), Vietnam, Cambodia. Cubans were lucky to be so close to the US - people were able to escape Communism. Otherwise the death toll there w/h/b in the millions too instead of just the thousands and tens of thousands.
