"Or "Blame the companies who manufacture their CF bulbs in China in order to save costs, but continue to advertise the 10,000 hour lifetime"?"

But, that is the problem. They either die pretty quickly, or they last a long time. So part of it is an infant mortality problem.

In addition, they are very heat sensitive. If the fixture doesn't have good air circulation, they die early that way too.

so the answer is, "Blame China"?

I honestly don't know. I thought is was an interesting article that contained a lot of useful info about bulb technology.

If indeed they (Chinese companies) are using cheap, shoddy manufacturing processes to produce bulbs that burn out quickly, instead of lasting 10 or 12 years (where the cost savings in electricity really pencil out), then they do need to shape up.

Whether or not the mercury in landfill issue from throwaway CF bulbs becomes a major problem is yet to be seen. And, as the author pointed out, there are decorative applications that use incandescents that cannot be easily addressed with CF's and also the fact that rheostat dimmer fixtures are incompatible with CF's.

Unfortunately, as in too many other matters these days, choice is being overruled by mandates. Big Bro will make your consumer decisions for you..
