"We're going to start running out of silicon and plastic at some point..."

Silicon is one of the most common elements on the planet. Silicates, like sand but there are many other types, make up most of the rocks and sediments you see. When we run out of those, there won't be much of a planet left.

Plastics don't have to be made from oil. organic matter of most any type can be a feedstock, it is just currently more expensive. Now, true, we need to solve the energy problem before that could go much further, but that is a given.

That's what the rest of the universe is FOR Z. It's our manifest destiny to move out to the planets, and then the stars, to consume them like termites.

We'll invent machines to do it, and they probably won't even recognize intelligent life when we are consuming their planet.

Meanwhile, back on the ranch, we'll "evolve" into immobile sessile creatures with vestigial arms and legs, connected to our serving robots that tend us by indirect neural transmitters as well as our extensive communication gear that allow us to go wherever our robots are and experience anything we can dream as real.

Silicon is sand.....the problem is plastic...which comes from oil. In the future we may only be able to change the guts and leave the exterior alone. Fashion would take a hit but who cares.
