It was very close, bu no nixon did not win the popular vote although some charged fraud against the dems particularly in chicago back then.
In modern times, gore v bush was the first instance of this. Back in the day when states were states, the electoral college played a more meaninful role but in todays world, at minimum EC should go to PR to prevent what happened in 2000 from happening again. And for folks who liked the outcome in 2000, please keep in mind that it could easily happen in reverse. Personally i want a national election and that would have to be enabled by amendment i believe.
