The popular vote is misleading. The simple fact that the Repubs can simply write of NY and California skews the vote. No effort is made there. The whole thing is now about strategy. The strategy is to spend one's efforts in a plan to get the electoral votes. When Ohio or Fla is key - that is where the money goes.

If 64,000 votes swung Kerry's way in Ohio, Kerry would have won, while losing the popular vote by a lot more than Bush lost it in 2000. I am sure we would have had lots of Republicans complaining about the EC then.

It's interesting that the same people that complain about Gore losing, while winning the popular vote, also complain that Kerry lost because he lost Ohio due to fraud.
