I feel like the article should have made it clearer. Judging from the comments alone, most people are alreaady assuming that $420B is the actual cost of building 30,000 square miles of solar panels. That tells me that they're not even bothering to do the math.

There's nothing wrong with government helping to "grease the skids," but the money really ought to be wisely spent on research toward more efficiency, not foolishly spent on stuff that cannot sustain itself economically.
