I think you've got it backwards here. With regards to Galileo....he was persecuted for daring to suggest that Copernicus was correct i.e. that the earth is not the center of the universe. The mighty ESTABLISHMENT had to be dragged kicking and screaming into the realization that THEY were wrong.

That too. He hasn't got it backwards, he's just dealing with a slightly more complex (and slightly more realistic) model of history than the simple Galileo-vs-Church one you're using.

It all depends on the reliability of the model. Now where have I heard that before?

Dendrochronology and isotopic variations in ice cores are most commonly applied proxies for evaluating further back in time. The fact that global surface temperatures have warmed up alarmingly in the last 30 years as measured by thermometers is the cause for concern.....

Dendrochonology is one of those areas climatolgists fight about. Some do not trust tree rings as proxies, pointing out that they are more sensitive to moisture than heat, and give false readings in cool wet years. They prefer sendimentary proxies.

BTW global temperatures have NOT warmed up "alarmingly" unless you alarm very easily. the increase for the last 100 years is 0.8 degrees Celsius. The rise from 1900 to 1940 was actually sharper.

The mighty ESTABLISHMENT had to be dragged kicking and screaming into the realization that THEY were wrong. Uhh, what you said. I thought that's what I said also.

Dendrochronology and isotopic variations in ice cores are most commonly applied proxies for evaluating further back in time

These techniques require tangible samples. So far as I am aware, no one has air in a bottle preserved from centuries ago to evaluate and measure atmospheric conditions. Let alone from eons ago.

The fact that global surface temperatures have warmed up alarmingly in the last 30 years as measured by thermometers is the cause for concern.....

Let me try a hypothetical on you. Imagine the world situation to be exactly as it is today, except that the Global warming flap never happened -- no scientists speaking of it, no media, nada. No one ever heard of it. Now do you think people you know, family, friends, etc., would often be saying to you, "Bobby, have you noticed how much warmer the climate has become since 1980?" If your answer is "yes," than I'll quit right here.

My answer is an emphatic "no." I don't believe for a minute that anyone would be aware of it in the slightest. That tells me that the change has been imperceptible if it has happened at all. Moreover, the time period of 30 years is an infinitesimally tiny blip in time, far too short to draw any conclusions or make any predictions of the future.

This illustrates my point that people should rely on their own perceptions and intelligence, and exercise healthy scepticism when confronted with scientific theories that fail the test of logic and common sense.

Not only are we a scientifically illiterate society, but half the people in the country think the Bible is a science text...

In a recent Gallup poll it was found that half the adults in America believe that the earth is 6,000 years old. The reason they give for believing this is "the Bible says so". Meanwhile, according to Christian astronomer Dr. Hugh Ross, 99% of all scientists believe this idea is more far fetched than believing the world is flat. Their reason? The scientific record says so.

Maybe we need to point out that the world is supposed to end in fire next time..Repent sinners, before it is too late. Won't change anything, cuz now it is "inevitable", but at least we would all be on the same page.
