Lets look are your statement again:

The greenhouse effect is about the sun's radiation directly warming the gases, that doesn't happen in a greenhouse.

You are claiming that the GHG in the atmosphere are warmed directly by the sun's radiation. At least that is how I read the statement above. You are clearly claiming this is not the case for a greenhouse, so when you say "greenhouse effect" I think you are referring to the claims of "greenhouse effect" wrt to the earth & its atmosphere.

I never claimed that you were implying this for an actual greenhouse so don't accuse me of that.

Unfortunately, the above claim you make regarding the "greenhouse effect" as applied to the earth's atmosphere is completely incorrect, and illustrates very nicely why you don't understand anything about the subject.
