Reps will combat the problem by reducing benefits, and the amounts they would need to cut would also hurt the economy as seniors make fewer consumer purchases in an attempt to cover more of their own retirement expenses."

Simple means testing would solve the problem.

Just to throw a data point into the argument, the Bush tax cuts have actually made Federal tax receipts RISE by 40%, a point you rarely see mentioned in the media. What needs to be cut is Federal spending, and neither party looks likely to do it.
