The Houston rail isn't commuter - it is "light rail". A different animal. Houston's rail also goes where nobody wants to go. It serves no purpose other than a stupid attempt at flashing up the downtown for a long-gone Olympics bid.

FYI, Salt Lake City's light rail has done quite well and is used by commuters in the lower valley to ride into downtown jobs. The new commuter rail line runs along old Union Pacific right of ways from Ogden in the north down the valley into SLC, where it will tie into the bus and light rail station. Ogden was the armpit of the valley until the last three years. Now people are starting to look at homes in the low-priced Ogden market with an eye on the commuter rail ride to SLC.
