It's easy to forget how big the USA is in oil consumption. China and India combined consume half as much as the USA. Thanks for that graph.

Consumption in the USA can be cut quite quickly. People can easily buy a micro car and bicycle instead of a replacement SUV [which they are already doing]. They can move closer to work. They can take public transport. They can wear clothes instead of heating huge houses. They don't need it chilly inside in summer [turn off the air conditioners].

Flying is not particularly necessary for nearly everyone. It's a fun thing people do.

Look how much oil consumption dropped in the USA after 1979 price increase. A BIG drop.

Nuclear reactors do take years to build, but once built, a drop in oil price won't turn them off.
