The main reason I like Nuance is my belief that voice is the most natural and elegant interface for miniature devices. Have you ever tried to enter more than a few words of text into an iPhone or similar smartphone? It's a very time-consuming and error-prone process. I think smartphones will rapidly become the de facto computers of average citizen in the developing world and voice recognition will be their primary interface.

Palm Centro's Nuance Voice Control is an important first step in this direction, allowing the user to dictate and transcribe a text message or Palm calendar entry. In my tests of this device, the accuracy was surprisingly good. The main problem was the time it took to transcribe messages longer than a sentence or two. I am not sure if the speech algorithms reside on the local device or if it is relayed to a computer at the central office for processing. Anybody know?

The only other flaw seems to be the cost of the VoiceControl service, which at about $10 per months was thought by most reviewers to be too steep.

Anyhow, I am still very bullish on Nuance, in spite of the drubbing it has taken over the last few weeks.
