Another argument he keeps returning to is the argument that government intervenes all the time and often massively anyway, so why complain about this particular intervention.

If anything the fact that government already is so interventionist is more reason for me to argue against additional intervention than it is reason for me to accept additional intervention. If the total level was so small than it might not be such a big deal, but if the total level is huge, than even if each intervention is justified in isolation (and of course that's far from always being the case), you might get additional problems from the large combination.

The "heap" can be more of a problem than all of the "grains" added together.

That's one of those figments that you won't let go. I don't see anyone here defending the status quo. If you see someone defending the status quo, please point it out. If you can't find any examples, stop spreading the falsehood.
